Washington Crossing the Delaware captures one of the most dangerous and consequential moments of the American Revolution. On the night of December 25–26, 1776, General George Washington led the Continental Army across the ice-choked Delaware River through darkness, bitter cold, snow, and driving sleet. The exhausted soldiers had marched for months with inadequate food, clothing, and equipment; many wrapped their bleeding feet in rags because they had no proper shoes. Yet they continued forward, knowing that the survival of the American cause might depend upon what happened next.

After completing the treacherous crossing, Washington’s men then had to march towards Trenton, New Jersey. There, they hoped to defeat the Hessian garrison, a division of highly trained German troops regarded among the most professional soldiers in the world. The operation was an extraordinary gamble. Defeat could have destroyed the Continental Army and extinguished the Revolution, but victory restored American morale, encouraged soldiers to remain in the army, and proved that Washington’s battered force could still prevail. This painting immortalizes not merely a river crossing, but the moment when courage, endurance, and determination helped keep the American cause alive.
